Summary

Written in English from the original posting

Senior Software Engineer (Data Platform) at Third Chair is a remote full-time role focused on backend services and large-scale data ingestion pipelines. Responsibilities include building crawlers, third-party provider integrations, queues, consumers, and reliable high-throughput systems that load data into databases. The role requires experience with Go, Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and AWS.

Job description

About the role:

Third Chair monitors social and ad platforms for unlicensed commercial use of music on behalf of record labels and publishers. Our backend scans, ingests and processes tens of millions of posts every month and turns them into cases our customers act on. You'll work across the backend, with a particular focus on how data comes into the system.

What you'll do:

  • Design, build and own production backend services and APIs end-to-end.
  • Improve our data ingestion layer: crawlers, third-party data providers, and the pipelines that load into our databases.
  • Make data collection reliable and cost-efficient, including proxy strategy, rate limits, retries, and evaluating and selecting vendors.
  • Work on high-throughput systems: queues, consumers, large datasets and observability.
  • Ship product features with the team from API to production.

What makes you a good fit:

  • 4+ years of professional work experience building production backends in Go, Node.js, Python or similar.
  • Strong experience with databases like PostgreSQL, ClickHouse and others, and AWS services such as ECS, RDS, Lambda and CloudWatch.
  • Experience building data ingestion or crawling systems at scale, and comfortable dealing with unreliable external sources.
  • Strong understanding of system design principles for production-grade systems.
  • Well integrated with AI coding tools like Claude, Codex etc.
  • Comfortable with US timezones.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Experience with web scraping, proxies (residential/mobile) or headless browsers in production.
  • Proven experience with very large datasets and analytical (OLAP) workloads.
  • Strong sense of cost optimization and build-vs-buy judgment when choosing vendors.
  • Experience building with LLM APIs or agents.

Benefits:

  • Work from anywhere - We're a distributed team across multiple timezones with a focus on outputs instead of location or working hours.
  • Generous PTO policy.
  • Competitive pay bracket.
  • Equity at a fast growing YC backed co in a disruptive market.

Please read before applying:

  • Please include a note where you answer in not more than 100 words: 'What is the most complex data ingestion or backend system you've built where you were the sole or primary developer? Mention the technical details, scale, and the hardest failure you had to handle.'
  • Applications that don't include the note or meet the minimum requirements will not be considered.
  • We review every application and have not more than 4 rounds in the process with a decision within 14 days of applying.
  • Job type: Full-time
  • Role: Backend
  • Salary: $40K - $100K
  • Equity: 0.05% - 0.25%
  • Visa: US citizenship/visa not required
  • Experience: 3+ years
  • Skills: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Go, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Python, ClickHouse

Interview process

Round 1 (15 mins): Knockout round covering background, role relevance, and a few essential technical questions.

Round 2 (45 mins): Hands-on programming interview; problem solving and code quality. All AI coding tools allowed!

Round 3 (45 mins): System design discussion with hands-on work focused on building production-ready systems, such as an ingestion pipeline pulling from unreliable external sources.

Round 4: HR round covering culture fit, expectations, and alignment.

We share feedback after every round and aim to close the process within 14 days.
